The flask is placed inside a kiln, allowing the wax tree to melt out and leaving behind a perfect negative space. When the flask is at the appropriate temperature for the molten metal, it is placed inside a vacuum or centrifuge caster. Molten metal is then poured into the opening, flowing from the trunk to the branches to the leaves. The flask is allowed to cool for about fifteen minutes, and then submerged in water to allow the investment to shoot out, revealing the metal tree.

Each piece is cut off the tree at the sprue, or branch, and then weighed. The cost is calculated by the market price of the metal multiplied by the weight of the piece. A labor charge is added onto each piece, starting as low as 50¢ per piece, depending on the size and complexity of the design. The excess metal is then sent to a refinery and recycled to be used again.
